Nowadays, there are many students who determine to have more
additional time in their study ours than usual. Students who usually study only
in class, now many of them who add their study hours in tutoring institution,
whether in regular class (in classroom) or private class (in student’s house).
The reasons are also various, for example: they cannot understand well the
subject that they learn in the class, parents’ demand to their children to be
able to master certain subject, preparation for examination, and etc. Of
course, it becomes the tutoring institution’s own challenge and the private tutors
themselves in order that the students can get what they expected in taking the
course. So that, the tutoring institution and the tutor must provides utmost
what the students’ needs are.
Then, how
to deal with this? How can the students achieve their expectation by adding the
study hours in tutoring institution or private tutor? Certainly, they expect
more than what they learn class and expect something different. Here, I will
focus on the private tutors’ role in handling the students because they
directly deal with the students. I will discuss about how to be a good tutor in
order that they can maximize their role as the private tutor. So that, the
students will feel something different in their study and can achieve what they
want.
1. Understanding the students’ character
This is the first thing to do when the tutor and students
meet for the first time. Tutor has to understand the student’s character well
before deciding the best method in tutoring. Whether they are quiet,
talk-active, easy to be bored, shy, easy to understand, difficult to
understand, etc or not. By knowing those characters, now the tutor should
determine the best method in dealing with them. And as much as possible, the
method must suit to the student’s character. So that, the tutoring process will
be going well because there are the same characters between the student and
tutor and the method used is appropriate.
2. Understanding the students’ problem
In this case, understanding the students’ problem is very
necessary. Ask them what their problems are actually. It is needed because some
students sometimes have a problem which is reluctant to admit it. For instance:
the students cannot understand the materials that are given in the classroom,
cannot concentrate while studying, easily bored while studying, feel not
confident, etc. Those problems must be solved soon in order that the learning
activity will be going well.
3. Understanding the students’ needs
After knowing the students’ problem, the next is
understanding the students’ needs. To know it, the tutor can ask them directly
what their needs are or ask them what their goals and their motivations are.
For instance: how to know the tips in studying easily, how to get the best
score in class, or for preparing the examination, etc. So that, the tutor will
map the tutoring process easily and determine the exact steps and method that
will be applied. As a result, the students’ needs will be fulfilled.
4. Give something different
Perhaps, this is what the most students expect, that is experiencing
something different to the things that they usually have in the classroom. When
there are students who cannot understand the material well in the classroom due
to the monotone lesson, so give them the various learning activity and method
which is different. When there are students who easily bored while studying in
the classroom, so give them the different atmosphere. For example the tutor can
ask them to study outdoor such as in the garden, under the tree, gazebo, etc
that could uplift their desire of learning. Therefore, they will be
experiencing something new and feel that study is a fun and missed thing.
5. Be a model and motivator
Just like a Javanese saying, “Guru itu digugu dan ditiru”
that means teacher is a model that should be trusted and imitated. As well as a
teacher, tutor should be a model for the students. Hence, give them a good
model, such as in personality, behavior, and words. Certainly, it will be an
additional point because, indeed, teaching is not only about material, but also
manner and character. Besides, tutor also should be able to motivate the
students. Motivate them to study hard and never give up. Motivate them by
praising them when they could do the task well, could understand the material
well, and for their achievement, etc. The point is how to arise their
confidence. So that, they will believe in their own abilities.
6. Mastering the materials
It is a must for a
tutor to master the material they teach. The mastery of materials can be done
by some ways. For example: learning first before tutoring, finding some
relevant materials from other resources, and preparing some answers for
anticipating the possible questions from the students. If tutor does not master
the materials, it will decrease the tutor’s confidence itself. Then, when you
as a tutor do not know the answer of the students’ question, just answer it
honestly if you cannot answer. However, try to find the answer and tell them in
the next meeting that you have found the answer.
7. Firm and discipline
Being firm without being rude, actually. The firmness of
tutor in the tutoring process is needed. Being firm here is in the positive
aspect. For instance: if it is wrong, juts tell that it is wrong with the
explanation or the reasons. If it is right, just tell them if it is right with
the explanation or the reasons. When the tutoring is out of the track, just
remind them. It is needed in order to keep the tutor’s prestige, and to prevent
the student’s arbitrary and to keep the tutoring stay on the track. Then, the
discipline of the tutor will influence the students. The discipline here is
discipline of the time, from the beginning until the end of the tutoring
process. Or the discipline on knowledge, that is the reliable materials. By
doing that, indirectly the tutor teaches them a good personality.
8. Friendly and pleasant
Be a friendly and pleasant tutor. Always looks passionate
and enthusiasm. Pleasant and make students comfortable. The friendliness here
means that the students and tutor respect each other, be polite, be patient,
and care. Then, tutor also be pleasant means that give something new and
different to the classroom atmosphere, be able to melt the atmosphere in order
that the tutoring will be fun and relaxed.
9. Make a friend, not a teacher
The common thing while studying in classroom is dominated by
the teacher that makes a big gap between them. In tutoring, as much as possible
give them time to speak, deliver the idea, and discuss something. So that, they
will not feel clumsy and afraid when they want to ask and discuss something. By
doing that, the tutoring activity will be lively, interactive, and relaxed.
However, remember that there is still a gap too between them, but the tutor and
the student must understand it. As a result, the student will still respect the
tutor, and the students also will feel more comfortable to study.
10. Be patient
This is the thing that the tutor must have, that is
patience. It is due to the various characters of students such as lazy, easily
bored, not enthusiasm, naughty, not respect, etc. Those various characters that
could make the tutor lose their patience. If the tutor lose their patience, it
will make the tutoring not feel pleasant anymore. If it happens, the tutoring
process will lose the essential of learning. That is why tutor must keep in
mind to be patient although it is difficult to implement.
That is about bow to be a good tutor,
especially private tutor. I believe that there many differences ways to make a
good tutor, but I hope that this writing could be useful. Good luck!
