DEFINITION (PENGERTIAN)
Direct speech (Quoted Speech)
Kutipan langsung dari seseorang yang ditandai dengan quotation mark (“…”)
Example:
Juan said, “I am happy”.
Indirect speech (Reported Speech)
Kalimat yang diucapkan oleh seseorang dengan kalimat berbeda.
Example:
Juan said that he was happy.
PRESENT OR PAST?
Perhatikan contoh berikut:
Present:
Tania says,“…”
They say, “…”
Past
Tania said,“…”
They said, “…”
EXAMPLE (CONTOH)
Present
Example 1:
Direct Speech (DS): My mother says, “ I will go to work”.
Indirect Speech (IS): My mother says that she will go to work.
Example 2:
Direct Speech (DS): They say to me, “You are so handsome”.
Indirect Speech (IS): They say to me that I am handsome.
Example 3:
Direct Speech (DS): Rani asks Adam, “Where is my book?”.
Indirect Speech (IS): Rani asks Adam where her book is.
Example 4:
Direct Speech (DS): Tio says, “Andin’s father is my teacher”.
Indirect Speech (IS): Tio says that Andin’s father is his teacher.
Past:
Example 1:
Direct Speech (DS): She said, “I am going now”.
Indirect Speech (IS): She said that she was going then.
Example 2:
Direct Speech (DS): The lord said, “ I will employ you”.
Indirect Speech (IS): The lord said that he would employ me.
Example 3:
Direct Speech (DS): Bob told me, “I teach English”
Indirect Speech (IS): Bob told me that he taught English.
Example 4:
Direct Speech (DS): “ I want to go to Jakarta,” Diana told me.
Indirect Speech (IS): Diana told me that she wanted to go to Jakarta.
Example 5:
Direct Speech (DS): Bob asked me, “Open the window”
Indirect Speech (IS): Bob asked me to open the window.
Example 6:
Direct Speech (DS): “ You should study hard,” My father said to me.
Indirect Speech (IS): My father advised me to study hard.
Time changing:

Tomorrow >>>>> next day
