DEFINITION OR FUNCTION

Hope

Hope mainly expresses a desire that is possible or likely to happen.

 

 

How to use “Hope” Generally

We usually use:

S +  hope + that + clause     OR     S + hope +  to + infinitive

But, it's very common to drop 'that'.

a)  I hope that you have a great time.

b)  I hope that she passed the exam.

c)  I hope to pass the exam.

d)  I hope to get there early.

We can also use two short answers: 'I hope so' and 'I hope not'.

 

How to use “Hope” for the Present

We can use the Simple Present Tense (verb-1) or the Present Continuous Tense (Verb-ing).

Example:

a)  I hope (that) his father is fine.         (Simple Present)

b)  I hope (that) Ana is coming here.    (Present Continuous)

 

How to use “Hope” for the Future

We can use hope for future by adding “will/can/ to infinitive”

Example:

a)  I hope that she will come to the party tomorrow.

b)  I hope that he can teach next week.

c)  I hope to make a new record next month.

 

Wish

Wish usually expresses a desire that is impossible or unlikely to happen/different in the present; to talk about regrets from the past; and to express hope for another person's success or happiness or pleasure on a particular occasion.

 

How to use “Wish”+ that + Simple Past Tense (Verb-2)

To talk about something that we would like to be different in the present or the future. It's used for things which are impossible or very unlikely.

Example:

a)  I wish that I had a big house (I don't have a big house)

b)  I wish that you lived close by (you don't live close by).

c)  I wish that John wasn't busy tomorrow (he is busy tomorrow).

d)  I wish I was rich . (you are poor)

e)  I wish I could speak English (unfortunately, you cannot)

 

How to use “Wish” + that + Past Perfect (had + verb-3)

To talk about regrets from the past. These are things that have already happened but we wish they'd happened in a different way

Example:

a)  I wish that I had studied harder at school. (I didn't study hard at school)

b)  I wish that I had not eaten so much yesterday! (But I ate a lot yesterday.)

c)  I wish that the train had been on time. (Unfortunately the train was late)

d)  I wish I had taken the test. (You did not take the test)

 

How to use “Wish” to express for another person's success or happiness or pleasure on a particular occasion

S + wish + indirect object + direct object

Indirect object (whom you wish something for), whereas Direct object (your wish)

Example:

a)  I wish you all the best.                            

b)  We wish you every success in the future.

c)  I wish you luck.

d)  She wishes me luck on my competition.

e)  I wish to see you.

Plan

Plan is a set of decisions about how to do something in the future.

How to plan something in the future?

We can use:

1.  Plan

2.  Will

3.  Be going to

 

How to use “Plan to”

S + plan to + verb-1

Example:

a)  I plan to go to your house tonight

b)  I plan to sell my shoes

c)  I plan to be there in five minutes

 

How to use “Will”

S + will + verb-1

Example:

a)  I will buy some foods in canteen after this class

b)  I will ask Ana to meet me tomorrow

c)  She will help me cooking in the kitchen

 

How to use “Be going to”

S + is/am/are + going to + verb-1

 

Example:

a)  I am going to go London next year

b)  She is going to continue her study in Jakarta

c)  They are going to plant red roses at school

 

EXAMPLE DIALOGUE 1

Aming      : I heard that you will participate in singing contest. Is that true?
Budi         : Yes, it is. I will try my best.
Aming      : Nice! I hope that you win the contest 
Budi         : Thank you. I hope so too. 

 

EXAMPLE DIALOGUE 2

Anya        : Happy birthday, Jack.  I wish you every success in the future.
Jack         : Thanks, Anya. 
Anya        : I bring a present for you. 
Jack         : You are so kind. What is it? 
Anya        : Just open it. 
Jack         : Wow! Is it a watch?  
Anya        : Yeah. I hope you like it. I heard that your watch was broken. 
Jack         : Sure, I like it. Thank you so much, Anya. 
Anya        : You are welcome. I’m glad you like it.

 

EXAMPLE DIALOGUE 3

Blue         : Excuse me. Can you help me, please? 
White       : Sure. What can I do to help you? 
Blue         : Can you translate this Spanish for me?
White       : Sure. It is easy.
Blue         : Thanks a bunch. I wish I could speak Spanish so that I can translate it by myself.
White       :It’s a pleasure to help you

 

EXAMPLE 4

Revo        : Brio, have you heard that One Punch Man movie will release next week?
Brio          : Really? I have not heard that.
Revo        : Yes, really. I plan to watch it. How about you?
Brio          : Yeah. That’s great! I also want to watch it. We can go together.
Revo        : Sounds good!

 

The simple example of “Hope” and “Wish”, and “Plan

1. I hope I am accepted in that company.

    (You are possible to be accepted because you applied the job there)

2. I wish I had a new car.

    (In fact, I do not have a new car) – different in the present

3. I wish I had studied harder at school.

    (In fact, I did not study hard at school) - regret

4. Happy birthday, wish you all the best

    (hope for another person’s success)

5. I plan to take an English course

    (in future, I will take an English course)
