Definition of Proverb

Proverb is a short sentence that people often quote, which gives advice or tells you something about life. (Pepatah/Peribahasa; sebuah kalimat singkat yang biasanya diungkapkan oleh seseorang ynag berupa nasihat atau tentang kehidupan).

 

Function of Proverb

To impart knowledge, offer advice, teach or reinforce morals, make an argument, relieve interpersonal tensions, aid in understanding, or to console or inspire others. (Untuk menanamkan pengetahuan, member nasihat, mengajarkan nilai moral, membuat argument, memberikan pemahaman atau menginspirasi orang lain).

 

1. “No pain no gain”

Meaning: Nothing is achieved without effort

Indonesian equivalent: Berakit-rakit kehulu, berenang-renang ketepian. Bersakit-sakit dahulu bersenang-senang kemudian.

 

2. “Give him an inch and he will take a yard”

Meaning: Give someone a little and they will want more - some people are never satisfied.

Indonesian equivalent: Dikasih hati, minta jantung

 

3. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”

Meaning: You should adopt the customs of the people or country you are visiting and behave in the same way.

Indonesian equivalent: Di mana bumi dipijak di situ langit di junjung.

 

4. “It’s no use crying over spilt milk”

Meaning: Don't express regret for something that has happened and cannot be remedied.

Indonesian equivalent: Nasi sudah menjadi bubur

 

5. “The grass is always greener on the other side”

Meaning: When someone is not satisfied with their own lot in life and always assumes that there are better things in other places.

Indonesian equivalent: Rumput tetangga selalu lebih hijau


6. “Like father like son/ the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”

Meaning: A son's character can be expected to resemble his father's.

Indonesian equivalent: Buah jatuh tidak jauh dari pohonnya.

 

7. “Killing two birds with one stone”

Meaning: To achieve two things by doing a single action

Indonesian equivalent: Sekali berenang, dua tiga pulau terlampaui.

 

8. “A good marksman may miss”

Meaning: A situation that even a very skilled person may fail to achieve the target.

Indonesian equivalent: Sepandai-pandainya tupai melompat akhirnya jatuh juga.

 

9. “Butterfly is not a beauty without caterpillar”

Meaning: Something will not be achieved without process.

Indonesian equivalent: Setiap keindahan membutuhkan proses.

 

10. “Do not judge a book by its cover”

Meaning: Don't judge by appearances

Indonesian equivalent: Jangan menilai seseorang dari penampilannya

 

11. “A friend in need is a friend indeed”

Meaning: A true friend is someone who helps you when you are in trouble rather than leaving you to fend for yourself.

Indonesian equivalent: Teman yang ada saat dibutuhkan adalah sebenar-benarnya teman.


12. “Practice makes perfect”

Meaning: People become better at something if they do it often/every day.

Indonesian equivalent: Latihan Membuat Menjadi Sempurna

 

13. “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you”

Meaning: To act badly towards the person who is helping or has helped you. Ungrateful.

Indonesian equivalent: Kacang lupa kulitnya.

 

14. “The early bird gets the worm”

Meaning: Someone will have an advantage if they do something immediately, or before other people do it

Indonesian equivalent: Bangun pagi biar rezeki tak dipatok ayam.

 

15. “Actions speak louder than words”

Meaning: Actions are more important than words. Or rather, what someone does has more value than what someone says.

Indonesian equivalent: Apa yang kamu lakukan lebih bermakna daripada sekedar berkata-kata.

 

16. “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch”

Meaning; You must not be too confident that something will be successful.

Indonesian equivalent: Jangan terlalu berharap atas sesuatu yang belum tentu terjadi.

 

17. “Still waters run deep”

Meaning: A quiet person with a calm outward appearance can have much knowledge or wisdom.

Indonesian equivalent: Diam-diam menghanyutkan.

 

18. “Many hands make light work”

Meaning: People can do things more quickly and easily when they work together.

Indonesian equivalent: Berat sama dipikul ringan sama dijinjing.

 

19. “Where there is a will, there is a way”

Meaning: If someone has the desire and determination to do something, he or she can find a method for accomplishing it.

Indonesian equivalent: Dimana ada kemauan, di situ ada jalan.

 

20. “Misfortunes never come singly”

Meaning: Bad things or situations always come in groups or streaks, they never come in a single way.

Indonesian equivalent: Sudah jatuh tertimpa tangga.
